Paint Along with Uhky Uhky
Uhky Uhky’s Demos in the Paint Along Workshop included 4 studies of scenes of Manila and 1 final wet on wet painting. He generously shared his critiques on how to improve participants works from sketching to final works.
Key Takeaways:
1. Set your priority. How do I evaluate if my painting is good or bad? What is my goal?
2. Find the balance between realism and expression using lighting and expressive brush strokes.
3. Create rhythm in the shapes. Connect the shapes from left to right.
4. Don’t make uniform shapes/ spaces between shapes.
5. If you don’t like a certain area, spray it with water! blur it so it doesn’t attract attention.
6. Value sketch is your guide map.
7. Play around with your painting! Don’t worry so much about copying your reference exactly.
8. Don’t forget to leave white areas.
Quick tips to remember:
1. Horizon line is at the top of the heads and cars.
2. Focal point is where the most contrast of dark & light is.
3. Farther areas use cool and lighter colors.
4. Closer areas (foreground) use warmer and darker colors.
5. #3-4 is true, but also color doesn’t really matter if you have the correct values of light and dark!
6. Use Daniel Smith Lunar Black for the nice granulation effect.
